Dog grooming is one of the most rapidly growing industries in the UK. According to the PDSA there are 9.9 million pet dogs in the UK; with 27% of dogs receiving regular grooming services* this makes for a potentially very lucrative business.
A career in dog grooming also has its health benefits; studies have shown that regular interaction with animals helps deal with stress, anxiety and depression whilst also lowering blood pressure. Not many careers can claim to do that!
So, how do you go about becoming a professional dog groomer?
Firstly you will need to complete a professional dog grooming qualification. At WAGS we offer the Open College Network (OCN) Level 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming – 603/0891/6. Unlike City & Guilds, which requires students to complete level 2 first before moving on to level 3, OCN combines Level 2 and level 3 making the qualification quicker to complete and less costly.
The OCN Level 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming involves a combination of practical grooming assessments and theory coursework. Students must complete 175 practical hours in WAGS, grooming a wide variety of different breeds of dog and coat types. Theory coursework can be completed from home however, a tutor is always available if support is required. We try to be as flexible as possible with days and times you attend as we are aware that the majority of people have other responsibilities.
How much does the course cost? See it more as an investment…The OCN Level 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming is on special offer for the beginning of 2020 at £3400, if paid in full directly to WAGS, or £3500 if paid in instalments through Payl8r; click on the link below to select your instalment plan:
Not 100% sure dog grooming is for you? Complete one of our taster day courses first! The dog grooming day course is a great way of seeing if dog grooming is for you before committing to the full course. The day involves you observing the tutor grooming a dog, before you get to groom a dog yourself as the tutor watches and offers support. It is only £125 and this is redeemable against the OCN Level 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming. You will also get a step by step grooming guide to take away with you. Just don’t forget to wear clothes that you don’t mind being covered in fur!
What’s next? So you have completed the qualification but don’t know what steps to take next on your dog grooming journey; whether you are wanting to go on to become a self employed groomer or work as an employee in a grooming salon, we will give you ongoing support. From advice on what equipment to purchase, what business insurance companies we recommend or for a job reference, we are always here to help and we encourage all of our past students to keep in touch!
